The Underwater Channel starts on September 1st

(21.08.2008)

The Underwater Channel (www.theunderwaterchannel.tv) is a new free to watch online TV channel available globally on your computer. It is fuelled by the passion of divers and dedicated to exploring the mysteries and the marvels of the underwater world.

UWC is a unique mix of original and acquired programming. Each month seven divers - the Faces of the Channel - present Splash! - a magazine-style program with bite-sized topical stories, interviews, resort reports and equipment reviews. There will also be a monthly underwater photography master class with Martin Edge and Creature Features with Dr. Alex Mustard.

The Channel's Faces are experienced and well known divers from different dive destinations around the world who bring their own particular passions and expertise to the Chanel. Their geographically diverse reports bring a truly global perspective to The Underwater Channel.

UWC's acquired content (its video on demand) is a mix of professionally produced videos on a broad range of underwater subjects from film makers around the world. At the heart of The Underwater Channel is the desire to be a maverick for change and they are pleased therefore to extend the offer of their platform to Ocean charities keen to promote their own causes to a wider, focused international community.

The Faces of The Underwater Channel are:
Mark Addison - intrepid shark researcher from South Africa
Julie Andersen - passionate environmentalist and US based shark ambassador
Sara Campbell - world champion free diver based in Dahab
Simon Enderby - based in Sipadan, Malaysia. Simon is an accomplished underwater cameraman and photographer
Monty Halls - explorer and best described as an "underwater Indiana Jones" UK based
Miranda Krestovnikoff - acclaimed TV presenter and diver from the UK
Roger Munns - underwater cameraman and superb photographer based in Malaysia

Amongst UWC's interviewees on Deep Talk in its September launch will be Captain Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd. Paul has been described as "the world's most aggressive, most determined, most active and most effective defender of marine wildlife". He will talk of his campaigning and upcoming agenda and inspirational life with Sea Shepherd marine conservation. Viewers will also meet Dr. Alex Mustard, marine biologist and superb photographer who Presents Creature Features. This will be a monthly browse through some breathtaking species footage captured by some of the world's leading underwater cameramen who film for us. They are also privileged to introduce Martin Edge, celebrated underwater photographer and author of The Underwater Photography (in its 3rd edition) who will be hosting Exposure a special monthly Masterclass on underwater photography for The Underwater Channel.

PADI Worldwide's International VP for Marketing, Terry Cummins has said "The concept of a Broadband TV Channel dedicated to the diving and underwater world is long overdue and PADI is delighted to be forging a relationship with UWC and exploring the opportunities it presents. The Underwater Channel will allow the worldwide PADI community of some 10 million divers to see and learn about the marine environment in a new and exciting way".

The Underwater Channel's acquired content has been made by professional underwater film-makers across the world. A broad range of subjects are explored including natural history, wreck diving and cave diving, marine conservation, creature encounters, scuba adventures and much much more!

The founder of the Channel is Emmy award-winning filmmaker Nicholas Claxton who says "I'm thrilled that the concept of the Underwater Channel has been met with such enthusiasm from so many key figures in the dive community not just in the UK but wider Europe, USA and Asia Pacific too. The global diving community is young and internet-savvy. This is the birth of a pioneering venture which will cater for their passion online and hopefully persuade armchair divers to take the plunge!"
